Saif Ali Khan Calls Attack a Botched Burglary: ‘That Poor Guy’s Life Is More Screwed Than Mine’

Actor Saif Ali Khan was violently attacked with a knife during an attempted robbery at his Bandra home on January 16. The incident occurred at the residence he shares with his wife, Kareena Kapoor, and their two children. Speaking about the attack for the first time, Saif told Delhi Times that he believes it was a burglary attempt that went wrong. While trying to stop the intruder, he sustained stab wounds to his thoracic spine. A piece of the knife had to be surgically removed from his body.

Saif’s Thoughts on the Incident

In the interview, Saif mentioned that he has no plans to increase security or keep weapons at his Mumbai home. Explaining his stance, he said, “Nothing will change. See, if you start doing that… because I don’t feel I’m under threat. It was not a premeditated attack. I think it just was a burglary attempt gone wrong. That poor guy, his life is more screwed than mine.”

How Saif Would Have Handled It Differently

When asked if he would have reacted differently in hindsight, Saif said, “I would put on the light and firstly tell him, ‘Do you know who I am?’ And I think he would say, ‘Oh s**t! I’m in the wrong house.’ And I’d say ‘Right, put the knife down and let’s talk about this.’ I think I would have tried to reason. But it was a mixture of anger, outrage and a kind of defense. It was just too quick. And it was completely instinctive.”

Saif suffered six injuries, including two deep wounds. He was immediately taken to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent surgery for the cuts on his neck and spine. The Mumbai police are currently investigating the case and have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national, in connection with the crime.

The actor was discharged from the hospital on January 21 and was seen entering his Bandra residence with bandages on his neck and wrist. He made his first public appearance after the attack during the promotion of his upcoming Netflix film, Jewel Thief.
