Rohit Bal’s Will Sparks Dispute: Family, Lalit Tehlan Clash Over Separate Wills

Renowned luxury fashion designer Rohit Bal’s will has sparked a dispute, with former model and close associate Lalit Tehlan claiming possession of the document. According to Tehlan, a significant portion of Bal’s assets have been bequeathed to him. Meanwhile, Bal’s brother, Rajiv Bal, has asserted that the family also holds a will and is unaware of the one Tehlan claims to possess. Fondly known as Gudda, Rohit Bal passed away at the age of 63 on November 1.

Rajiv Bal expressed his family’s lack of knowledge about the will presented by Tehlan. As per media reports, Tehlan stated that Rohit Bal owned 99% of Rohit Bal Designs Pvt Ltd., while the remaining 1% was owned by Rajiv Bal, nicknamed Billa. Tehlan added that most of Bal’s assets are tied to the company, which requires two directors, and claimed that “a major chunk” of these assets, including “movable and immovable assets, his personal house, personal bank account, and fixed deposits,” would come to him.

Tehlan, a model and founder of Alexander Jeans by Rohit Bal, also mentioned that the late designer had generously allocated funds for his long-serving employees, including his cook and driver. Speaking about these claims, Rajiv Bal stated he cannot comment until he examines the will Tehlan refers to.

Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), has been appointed the executor of Rohit Bal’s will. The FDCI announced Bal’s demise on November 1, describing him as an iconic designer celebrated for his lotus and peacock motifs. The council shared a heartfelt post on Instagram:
“We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, and inspired generations.”

“His legacy of artistry, and innovation along with forward thinking will live on in the fashion world. Rest in peace GUDDA You are a legend.”

Bal, who had been battling a heart condition and was admitted to the ICU in 2023, delivered his final show at the Lakmé Fashion Week in New Delhi. Bollywood actress Ananya Panday, his muse for the event, shared a photograph on her Instagram Stories of the two walking the ramp together during the grand finale.
