Lily Gladstone rewrites History With Best Female Actor Win at SAG Awards

Lily Gladstone of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ won the best female actor in a leading role category at the SAG Awards 2024 in Los Angeles, according to People.

Annette Bening received nominations for ‘Nyad’, Carey Mulligan for ‘Maestro’, Margot Robbie for ‘Barbie’, and Emma Stone for ‘Poor Things’ in the same category.

Gladstone won the award for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon‘ and she became the first Indigenous actor to win in the category.

“My friends, fellow actors, I feel the good in what you have done — what you do,” Gladstone started her speech with these words.

“This has been a hard year for all of us. Those in this room, those not in this room, I’m so proud that we have gotten here in solidarity with all of our other unions,” she added.

“It’s truly a gift that we get to do this for a living. That’s the win. It was getting to be here, it was getting to be on set. It was getting to tell stories,” she continued.

“It’s so easy to distance ourselves. It’s so easy to close off, to stop feeling, and we all bravely keep feeling, and that humanizes people. That brings people out of the shadows; it brings visibility.”

“Keep telling stories to everybody in this room, to everybody watching abroad. Those of you who are not actors but have a voice, have a story that needs to be heard,” she added.

“Thank you for all of the compassionate souls in this room and all of the storytellers here tonight. Keep speaking your truths, and keep speaking up for each other.”

According to People, Gladstone was the breakout star in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, as Osage lady Mollie Kyle, the wife of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio). The film chronicles the Osage massacre at the hands of criminal boss William Hale (played by Robert De Niro).

This year, the actress became the first Native American woman to win a Golden Globe, and she delivered her acceptance speech in her native Blackfoot language.

Lily Gladstone has also gotten a Critics Choice Award nomination and is the first Native American nominee for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Gladstone is the fourth Indigenous actress to receive a nomination in this category.
