Kalki Koechlin on Her Career Pause: ‘Waiting for Roles That Matter’

Kalki Koechlin made a powerful impression in 2009 with her role as Chanda in Dev D, where she played a student caught in an MMS scandal. Her character refused to be silenced by society’s judgment. Since then, she’s taken on many unconventional roles in films like That Girl in Yellow Boots, Margarita with a Straw, and A Death in the Gunj. But now, Kalki feels trapped in a pattern.

She Wants to Do More Than Just Play Troubled Women

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kalki revealed that she’s worried about being typecast. Recently seen as a lawyer in the Tamil film Nesippaya, she shared her thoughts when asked what kind of roles she wants now. Laughing, she said, “I don’t know how to answer that because I have no work right now.” After a pause, she added, “I think why I’m not doing anything is because I do want to wait for significant roles… quality roles. And those are not coming.” Kalki explained that most offers she gets are repetitive and fall into the same category. “There’s a lot of pressure to do the same thing I’ve done, especially the sort of… broken family, broken wife or broken affair girl. There have been a lot of those offers. And there have also been a lot of guest appearances. And neither of these is exciting to me at the moment. So I’m being patient and finding other ways to spend my creative time.”

She’s Excited About a Paranormal Thriller

Despite the lull in offers, Kalki has a project coming up. She stars in an upcoming Amazon MX Player mini-series called Bhay – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery. She shared, “I finished doing a show called Bhay, directed by Robbie Grewal and Arshad Sayyed. It’s a horror… but it’s a paranormal thriller really. It’s not your typical horror.” What drew her to the role was the fact that it’s inspired by true events. “It’s based on a real person, Gaurav Tiwari, who was running this thing called the Indian Paranormal Society. His death was under suspicious circumstances. It’s a very fascinating story, and hopefully it’ll be a new kind of thriller for India. Other than that, I am not doing anything.” The series also stars Karan Tacker, Danish Sood, and Saloni Batra. The release date hasn’t been announced yet.
