Adnan Sami recently responded to former Pakistani minister Fawad Hussain, who raised questions about his Indian citizenship. Hussain had posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), asking if Sami would be sent back to Pakistan following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s instructions. Shah had directed Chief Ministers to ensure that no Pakistani nationals remain in India after the Pahalgam terror attack.
Adnan Sami, famous for songs like Kabhi Toh Nazar Milao, Lift Kara De, and Tu Meri Mehbooba, was born in Lahore, Pakistan. However, he became an Indian citizen in 2015, a decision that sparked a lot of debate. Over the years, he has been vocal about his support for India and has even criticised Pakistan openly on social media.
Adnan Sami’s Past Comments on Pakistan
Back in 2022, Adnan Sami addressed his views about Pakistan through an Instagram post. He wrote, “Many people ask me why I have such contempt towards Pakistan. The hard truth is that I have absolutely no contempt towards the people of Pakistan who have been good to me. I love everyone who loves me- period. However, I have major issues with the establishment. Those who truly know me will also know what that establishment did to me for many years which ultimately became one of the big reasons for me to leave Pak.”
He further added, “One day, soon, I will expose the reality of how they treated me which not many know, least of all the general public which will shock many! I have remained silent about all this for many years, but will choose the right moment to tell all.”
Journey to Indian Citizenship
Adnan Sami applied for Indian citizenship in June 2015 after his Pakistani passport expired. He had been living in India for several years by then, fulfilling the eligibility criteria required for citizenship. By late December 2015, the Indian Home Ministry approved his application, and he officially became an Indian citizen on January 1, 2016.
In a previous interview with BBC, Sami revealed that he felt unsafe in Pakistan. His biggest worry was the safety of his family rather than his own. Due to ongoing issues with the Pakistani government, he decided to seek Indian citizenship, which he successfully obtained after a long battle.
