Aamir Khan Rejected ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ Sequel Idea, Reveals Director Abbas — Know Why?

Bollywood actor Imran Khan and director Abbas Tyrewala recently revisited the memories of their 2008 hit film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na during a conversation on the YouTube channel Aamir Khan Talkies. The duo revealed that although fans have long demanded a sequel, a follow-up film is unlikely—largely due to Aamir Khan’s reaction to the proposed storyline.

Abbas Tyrewala Recalls Aamir Khan’s Reaction

Director Abbas Tyrewala shared that shortly after the film’s release, he approached Aamir Khan—who produced the original—with an idea for a sequel. “Very shortly after the film’s release, I went to Aamir with an idea for the sequel — at some point, Jai and Aditi would fight. I told him, ‘Let’s start the sequel at the point when Jai and Aditi are on the verge of separation. Jai will bump into Meghna at a party and he is drunk,’” Abbas explained.

However, Aamir strongly opposed the concept. Abbas revealed, “Aamir told me, ‘Never refer to this movie again. I don’t want to hear anything about the sequel if that’s the direction you’re going in.’”

Why Abbas Never Moved Forward With a Sequel

Abbas admitted that he lacked the passion to create a sequel that lived up to the original. “I don’t know how to reboot fairytales. I haven’t seen them working well,” he said. He and Imran also discussed the idea of a reunion of the film’s characters over coffee but ultimately ruled out the possibility of making a second installment.

Fans Still Ask for a Sequel

Imran Khan humorously described how fans often confront him about the sequel. “People often come up to me and grab me by the shirt, demanding to know about the film’s sequel,” he said. Abbas added, “That’s my Instagram DM every day.”

About the Film

Released in 2008, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na starred Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza in a coming-of-age romantic story about best friends Jai and Aditi, who only realise their love after exploring other relationships. The film, also featuring Prateik Babbar, Manjari Fadnis, and Ayaz Khan, earned ₹82.10 crore worldwide, making it a commercial success.

Imran Khan’s Return to Bollywood

Following a long hiatus after his 2015 film Katti Batti, Imran Khan signaled a return to the screen in 2023. On Threads, he updated fans, writing, “To whom it may concern; I hear you. And I’m working on it. Thank you for being so patient with me.”

While Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na remains a beloved film among fans, the chances of a sequel appear slim. With Aamir Khan firmly against revisiting the story and the creators themselves uncertain about a follow-up, the film may remain a standalone classic.
