The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to appoint a new National President by the end of December 2024, according to sources within the party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Current President Jagat Prakash Nadda will continue in his role until the election process is completed.
Organizational Elections Underway
Preparations for the BJP’s organizational elections are already in full swing, with plans to elect new presidents at all levels, from local booths to the national level. The party’s constitution outlines a structured electoral process, beginning with elections for local committees, followed by mandal, district, regional, and state committees.
After the elections in half of the states, a national president will be elected. The entire process is expected to take approximately two months, culminating in the selection of a new president who will then nominate a team of office-bearers.
Historical Context and Tenure Limits
Under the current rules, a BJP national president can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms of three years each. This regulation was amended in 2012, influenced by the RSS’s support for Nitin Gadkari to serve a second term. However, Rajnath Singh ultimately took the position, leading the party through the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, after which Amit Shah assumed leadership. Nadda has been at the helm since January 2020 and is currently serving on an extension.
