Damoh is one of the key constituencies for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as historically this seat belonged to them, but in 2018, the BJP lost this seat by a margin of 798 votes. So this time around, the BJP wants to regain this seat.
Madhya Pradesh Damoh Constituency is one of the four assembly constituencies located in the Damoh district. It falls under the Damoh Lok Sabha constituency. BJP senior leader Jayant Malaiya was a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Damoh constituency since 1990 but lost his seat in 2018 to Congressman Rahul Singh with a margin of 798 votes.
According to the electoral demographic, the constituency consists of a substantial number of Brahmin, Patel, Kurmi, Dalit, and Muslim voters. As per recent stats, Damoh consists of 124,600 male voters, 116,400 female voters, and 7 voters from other categories.
Historically, Damoh has been considered a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with voters predominantly favouring the party. However, in the last assembly election, the people showed their trust in the Indian National Congress.
However, after Scindia’s betrayal in 2021, Congress Candidate Ajay Tandon won the by-election with a substantial margin of votes, which made the BJP rethink their plan. However, this time the BJP has again shown its faith in the veteran leader of the party and the former Finance Minister, Jayant Kumar Malaiya, who will contest against the incumbent MLA, Ajay Tandon.
A political analyst from Damoh said, “In the past two and a half years, Tandon has contributed to the construction of cow shelters, temples, and numerous roads in the constituency; however, few problems remain there. Despite having a cement factory within its territorial limits, the local people don’t seem to benefit from it.”
He further said despite being in the political spotlight, Damoh has remained untouched by any incident that has garnered national attention. Yet, consistent issues such as education, health, unemployment, and migration persist and often become the dominant topics during elections. The lack of employment opportunities leads to the migration of people to larger cities. The issue of a medical college also emerges as a matter of concern during assembly elections.
