Kashmir: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A with widespread festivities across Jammu and Kashmir. This milestone marks the Indian government’s historic decision to revoke the region’s special status, a move that the BJP hails as a significant step towards national integration.

The BJP organized a series of events throughout Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley, where party workers and leaders came together in rallies, hoisting flags, and distributing sweets to mark the occasion. The celebrations were accompanied by speeches from prominent BJP leaders, who reiterated their belief that the abrogation has ushered in an era of peace, development, and prosperity in the region.

Altaf Thakur, a senior BJP leader and the party’s spokesperson in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasized the transformative impact of the decision. He pointed to the substantial progress made in various sectors, including infrastructure, education, and healthcare, attributing these improvements to the removal of the region’s special status. Thakur also underscored that the abrogation has reinforced national unity and integration.

“The abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A has closed the chapter on separatist activities, hartals, stone-pelting, and killings. It has paved the way for lasting peace and development,” Thakur stated during one of the rallies.

Since the abrogation, the central government has initiated numerous measures to boost development and attract investment in Jammu and Kashmir. Projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure, fostering educational opportunities, and improving healthcare services have been launched, reflecting the government’s commitment to the region’s progress.

Despite these claims, the move continues to evoke mixed reactions among political leaders and residents. Some view the changes as a positive shift towards integration and development, while others express concerns about the potential erosion of local identity and autonomy. Opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir have been vocal in their criticism of the BJP’s celebrations. They argue that the abrogation has led to political and economic challenges, and they call for the restoration of statehood and democratic processes. These leaders urge the central government to engage with the local populace and address their grievances.

As the region reflects on the past five years, the debate over the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A remains a contentious issue. While the BJP celebrates the perceived benefits and achievements, opposition voices continue to highlight the complexities and challenges that have emerged in the wake of this historic decision.
