A video showing a bird seemingly helping to unfurl the Indian national flag during Independence Day celebrations in Kerala has gone viral, garnering over one million views on social media since its August 17 posting.
The footage depicts a flag being hoisted by a group of people, with the flag stuck at the top of the pole. As the flag remains unfurled, a bird appears to fly toward it, causing the flag to open and flower petals to drop. The social media user who shared the video, Shilpa, captioned it: “Kerala-National Flag got stuck at the top while hoisting. A bird came from nowhere and unfurled it!!”

The video quickly captured public interest, with many interpreting the bird’s actions as a sign of divine intervention. However, a follow-up video posted in the comments provides a different perspective. This video, taken from another angle, shows that the bird did not approach the flagpole. Instead, it perched on a coconut leaf behind the flagpole and then flew away, making it clear that the bird was not involved in the flag’s unfolding.

The X fact-checker team also addressed the situation, noting: “Missing context: The crow sits on the coconut leaf, behind the flag post. Did not influence the flag opening at all. Watching at 0.25x speed reveals clearly.”
