West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday— a day after a delegation of BJP MLAs petitioned him for alleged deterioration of the law and order situation in the state— left on a four-day visit to New Delhi.

On Monday, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari led a delegation of several BJP MLAs to Raj Bhavan to seek Dhankhar’s intervention, highlighting alleged lawlessness and the “partisan stance” of the state police.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had tweeted that Adhikari called on him and submitted a representation over the state’s current law and order situation.

Until a day ago, Raj Bhavan did not release any information about the Governor’s visit to Delhi. Instead, the issue was brought to the fore from the governor’s handle on Twitter a few hours before he left on Tuesday evening.

Taking to Twitter, the governor said he will go to the national capital late on Tuesday evening and return to Kolkata on June 18.

According to sources, the Governor of Bengal may meet not only Amit Shah but also President Ram Nath Kovind. Talks might also be held with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sources said.

Dhankhar did not reveal the reason for his sudden departure to Delhi. However, speculations about the governor’s visit to Delhi started after he met BJP representatives led by Shuvendu at Raj Bhavan on Monday. Dhankar has lately been launching scathing attacks on the state government and accusing them of facilitating post-poll violence. He has also questioned the accountability of Mamata Banerjee who is the Chief Minister of the state.

Dhankar also lashed out at Mamata, the state government, and Kolkata police on Twitter. Posting a picture of Shuvendu’s entry into the Raj Bhavan on Sunday evening, he wrote, “More than 50 MLAs from the opposition camp have expressed concern over the chaos in the state during Mamata Banerjee’s rule and the biased behavior of the state and Kolkata police since then.”

Governor has demanded intervention as the situation is ‘getting out of hand’. The governor was already aware of all the allegations. He assured the Leader of the Opposition Shuvendu Adhikari that he would look into the matter.
