After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement regarding repealing of the three farm laws on November 19, Punjab politics is abuzz with the news of Parkash Singh Badal’s comeback in the upcoming Punjab Assembly Elections as an active contestant.  Parkash Singh Badal is known to be the oldest face of Punjab Politics; also famous for his ‘son of the soil’ background. Being the oldest politician and supporter of farmers, the elder Badal’s comeback news created a stir among the politicians.

On September 17 last tear, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and Union food processing industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal quit the Narendra Modi government in protest against the three farm Bills tabled by the Centre in the Parliament. “I have resigned from [the] Union cabinet in protest against anti-farmer ordinances and legislation. Proud to stand with farmers as their daughter and sister,” she had tweeted.

A senior politician on the condition of anonymity said, “Harsimrat Kaur Badal sacrificed her seat against the farm laws and Parkash Singh Badal is known as the oldest zealot of farmers. This certainly is giving big support to SAD and people of Punjab, especially now that the farmers now look up to the Badal family for their issues.”

Shiromani Akali Dal has aligned with BSP for Punjab Elections and as a result, the SC/OBC class of Punjab has already aligned towards SAD-BSP, says a veteran politician. Whereas AAP, Congress politicians are also striving hard to woo the same class while meeting and dining with the autorickshaw drivers.

The Daily Guardian spoke to SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Parkash Singh Badal’s comeback in Punjab election.  He said, “I want Sardar Badal to contest the next elections. He has not said yes till now. But I am still trying. Badal Sahab is one of the tallest leaders of this era and the SAD wants him in the assembly where he has a towering but calming influence on one and all.”
