The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) issued an avalanche warning on Monday for the higher reaches of five districts in the region over the next 24 hours, cautioning residents to take necessary precautions.
Officials have indicated that there is a potential for avalanches with varying danger levels in different areas. Above 2200 meters, a “medium danger” level avalanche is expected in Kishtwar district of the Jammu division, as well as in Kupwara, Bandipora, and Baramulla districts in north Kashmir. Additionally, a “high danger” level avalanche is forecasted for central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Residents residing in these regions are urged to exercise caution and refrain from venturing into avalanche-prone areas until further notice.
This advisory comes in light of recent moderate to heavy snowfall in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. As a precautionary measure, authorities have reminded people to remain vigilant and dial 112 in case of any emergencies. The issuance of this warning underscores the proactive stance of the administration in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents amidst challenging weather conditions.
