Austria is poised to set a new record in its tourism sector, surpassing the previous high from 2019, after recording 115.6 million overnight stays since the beginning of this year.

In August alone, the number of overnight stays rose by 3 percent, exceeding 21 million. Tobias Thomas, Director General of the Austrian Federal Statistical Office (Statistics Austria), confirmed that the overnight stays registered in the first eight months of this year surpassed the previous record set in 2019.

“This is the highest number ever recorded for the first eight months of the year,” Thomas stated, highlighting that the pre-pandemic year of 2019 saw 115.3 million overnight stays from January to August.

Statistics also revealed a significant rise in tourism during August, the peak of Austria’s summer season, with a 9.6 percent increase in tourists to 6.1 million and a 3.0 percent rise in overnight stays, reaching 21.1 million compared to August of last year.
