Cyclone Alfred Approaches Australia: Flights Cancelled, Airports Shut Down

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is moving toward Australia, putting millions at risk as authorities prepare for its arrival. The storm has already triggered mass evacuations and led to the closure of airports, ports, and schools along the country’s southeast coast.

Flight Cancellations and Airport Closures

Although Cyclone Alfred has yet to make landfall, it has severely impacted travel. Strong winds have forced several airports in southeastern Australia to close. Major airlines, including Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia, have cancelled numerous flights to popular holiday destinations.

By Wednesday and Thursday, around 22 flights scheduled at Ballina Byron Gateway Airport were cancelled. Qantas also suspended flights to and from Lord Howe Island. Additionally, the Gold Coast Airport shut down operations until 4 PM on Wednesday, with no confirmation on its reopening.

Cyclone’s Path and Expected Landfall

Cyclone Alfred, classified as a Category 2 storm, is currently east of Brisbane. As of Wednesday, it was 425 km from the region, with sustained winds of 95 km/h. According to meteorologists, the cyclone is likely to maintain its intensity and hit the southeast coast early Friday.

The storm is expected to make landfall between the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, most likely near Brisbane. Authorities have issued warnings for a 450-500 km stretch, covering areas from Double Island Point in Queensland to Ballina in New South Wales.

Authorities on High Alert

Emergency services are closely monitoring the cyclone’s movement, urging residents to prepare for strong winds, heavy rainfall, and possible flooding. People in the warning zones are advised to stay indoors and follow safety guidelines as the storm intensifies.
