“Nothing can replace the void of losing our dear son. But we are trying to draw consolation from the fact that Gurjot’s life will go on in others and will give them more days with their families,” stated Hardeep Singh, the heart broken father of organ donor Gurjot Singh as he was being handed over the mortal remains of his demised son at the mortuary here at PGIMER.
The magnanimous gesture of consenting for Organ Donation by Singh family from Gehal, District Barnala, Gurjot gave a fresh lease of life to three terminally ill organ failure patients with transplantation of liver to a matching recipient in ILBS, Delhi and kidneys and pancreas to matching recipients here at PGIMER.
Expressing his gratitude to the donor family for their exceptional gesture, Prof. Surjit Singh, Director, PGIMER stated, “We at PGIMER are extremely grateful and appreciate the will of the Singh family to share the gift of life with three terminally ill organ failure patients.”
“Every transplant provides a new beginning for our patients and is an incredible achievement for the entire team involved in transplantation as well,” added the director.
After suffering a head injury, Gurjot was admitted to PGIMER and his week-long struggle with life came to an end as he succumbed and was declared brain dead on 9th April following the protocols of THOA.
Prof. Koushal further detailed, “It was a race against time. A green corridor was created from PGIMER Chandigarh to ILBS, Delhi with the excellent collaboration of Police Administration from all the districts from Chandigarh to Delhi so that the donated organ could be transported to ILBS, Delhi in the shortest possible time.”
Simultaneously, the Nephrology department identified several potential recipients who were asked to report at the earliest.
