A ground-level survey of the Nagina Parliamentary constituency was conducted by India News to analyse the performance of Girish Chandra, the Member of Parliament from Nagina, and gather voters’ feedback about him.
Syed rulers found Nagina as a jagir from the Mughals. Later, this region gained fame during the 1857 rebellion when a war took place between the Nawab of Najibabad and the British army in Bijnor. The Paaibagh in this area, also known as Jallianwala Bagh, witnessed a massacre by the British army during that time.
Initially, this Lok Sabha seat was a part of Bijnor, but based on the Election Commission’s recommendation, a separate constituency was formed in 2008. Since then, three Lok Sabha elections have taken place here in 2009, 2014, and 2019. BSP leader Girish Chandra is the current Member of Parliament from here. Girish Chandra, elected from Nagina in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, is considered significant within the BSP, particularly given his close association with Mayawati.
Girish Chandra has been in politics with the BSP for more than three decades, starting his political journey in 1991. He also became an MLA from Chandousi in the 2007 assembly elections. While he contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Nagina on the BSP ticket, he lost to the BJP. Although popular in his constituency, he is more visible in party activities.
Nagina Lok Sabha seat has not remained a stronghold for any party. Winners from different parties emerged in each of the three elections, with the voters giving a chance to a new candidate every time. In the past, it was the Samajwadi Party, followed by the BJP, and then the BSP that secured victory in consecutive elections.
Nagina Parliamentary constituency is relatively new, but developmental issues have not been new for this region. Development has been lacking in this Lok Sabha seat for years, with a recent focus on progress. However, the scale of development varies across different assembly constituencies. Nagina has a total of 5 assembly seats, and it has around 1.5 million voters.
While development is a significant concern, caste considerations often play a role during elections. The Muslim voters hold considerable sway in this constituency, and candidates with their full support tend to secure victory. The upcoming 2024 general elections are crucial for Nagina, and the electorate is likely to scrutinise the work of their Member of Parliament closely.
The fundamental structure is quite weak, with the attention needed to address the issues of farmers. The 2024 general elections hold special significance for Nagina Lok Sabha, where voters will carefully assess their representative’s performance before making a decision.
Parliamentary presence, the number of questions asked, utilisation of MP funds, and special contributions are factors considered for evaluating parliamentary performance.
The MP has an attendance of approximately 90%. About 51% of questions raised in the Parliament relate to the development of the constituency and the country. Nearly 87% of MP funds have been utilised, and around 60% show a special contribution to parliamentary activities. Based on these criteria, MP Girish Chandra scores 1 at 0.72, which is considered better.
The response to our six questions from the Nagina Lok Sabha constituency reflects the sentiments of the people. People mostly feel that the MP’s work is not visible in the constituency, and there is a lack of focus on development.
The voters in this constituency are expressing dissatisfaction with the MP’s work, wanting to see more active involvement in the local area. Despite this, when it comes to voting preferences, the majority favour the NDA, showing satisfaction with the Modi government’s work.
The ground survey reveals that Nagina Lok Sabha’s electorate is giving MP Girish Chandra a score of 7, which is 3.57, indicating an average performance. However, based on the questions asked to the ground audience, only 51% of points were obtained, which is relatively low.
In India News’ survey, questions similar to ours were asked of the people of Nagina Lok Sabha. The results show that the people are giving the MP a score of 1 at only 0.20, which is quite low.
The social media survey also indicates a low score for MP Girish Chandra, receiving only 20% in the 1st position. When considering all the scores, including the ground survey, social media survey, and our survey, MP Girish Chandra gets a total of 4.69, which is less than average. The people of Nagina Lok Sabha have expressed their dissatisfaction with MP Girish Chandra by giving him a failing grade.
After extensive interactions with thousands of individuals in the Nagina Lok Sabha constituency, India News has surfaced intriguing insights. Following conversations with diverse groups, encompassing women, men, farmers, labourers, students, and businessmen, the results indicate that MP Girish Chandra is garnering a mere 47%, reflecting a performance falling short of expectations.
However, forecasting the voting trends for this constituency in the upcoming elections remains a formidable task at this juncture.
Additionally, the pressing issues identified during these discussions include Extreme Unemployment, Urban Pollution, Drinking Water Crisis, Rural Roads in Disrepair, Irrigation Problems, Migration as a Significant Concern, Neglect of Education and Health, and an Environment of Lawlessness.
This suggests that the MP’s performance on the ground is not very favourable. Combining all the scores, MP Girish Chandra gets a total of 4.69, which is below average. Therefore, the people of Nagina Lok Sabha have marked MP Girish Chandra as ‘FAIL’ in his report card.
