The new and re-energised leadership of the Assam Congress has rejuvenated the grand party. This was evident in the recent results of the Lok Sabha Elections. The party managed to win the much coveted Jorhat constituency with Gaurav Gogoi leading from the front, followed by a win in Nagaon with Pradyut Bordoloi retaining his seat even after delimitation and lastly, Rockybul Hussain, winning the Dhubri seat with the biggest margin.

The Assam Congress has undergone significant leadership changes with Gaurav Gogoi at the helm. Gaurav Gogoi the firebrand leader of the Nation who recently named as deputy leader of Loksabha for the second time .As the party gears up for future elections and aims to strengthen its position in the state, Gogoi’s leadership is seen as a pivotal moment in its history.

Gogoi’s ascent to the leadership role comes at a crucial time for the Congress party in Assam. The party has faced challenges in recent years, including electoral defeats and internal challanges. Gogoi’s leadership is expected to rejuvenate the party’s structure and strategy, focusing on unifying the party and addressing the aspirations of Assam’s diverse population.

Bhupen Borah’s appointment as the APCC President came at a time when the Congress party was grappling with electoral setbacks and internal challenges. His leadership has injected new energy into the party, focusing on grassroots mobilization and addressing regional issues.

The biggest achievement of Bhupen Borah is to include alliance partners such as Raijor Dal, and Assam Jatiya Parishad to form the 16-party strong United Opposition Forum. Borah has been active in building alliances with like-minded regional parties to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiments and present a united front against the ruling party. He will play a crucial role ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Bhupen Borah’s strategy to not allow AIUDF to enter in alliance is considered as one of the biggest setback for the Badaruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF party as well as Assam CM Himanta Bishwa Sharma and BJP.

Rockybul Hussain became a National Headline after he won the Dhubri seat defeating incumbent MP Badrudin Ajmal by a huge margin of 10,12,476 votes. However, he has already been a towering leader of the party for more than two decades. Rakibul Hussain has experienced of five time continues win as MLA before elected as member of parliament. The Muslim consolidated vote went to Hussain after the AIUDF was exposed as the B team of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Apart from being a popular leader among the minorities, he is also popular with the general Assamese people and will play a key role in bringing Congress back to power in 2026.

The Congress has a mixed bag of senior and junior leaders, enough to take on the BJP. The leaders like Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupen Borah and Rockybul Hussain will lead the charge backed by capable leaders such as Debabrata Saikia, who is the Leader of oposition for constitutive second term. Debabrata Saikia, one of the most down-to-earth leaders in Assam Politics. His simplicity is unique even though he is the son of former CM Karmashree Heteshwar Saikia. Debabrata Saikia has considerable hold in Upper Assam and is a pan-Assam leader who can make the difference in upcoming elections with his strategy.

Another important leader is Congress MP from Nagaon Pradyut Bordoloi. Pradyut enjoys popularity in Upper as well as Middle Assam among tribals, caste Hindus as well as minorities. He will play a crucial role in leading the party in the upcoming elections.

These leaders have considerable backing in both the Upper and Lower Assam Barak valley areas, which will be enough for the party to get seats in all regions. They will be enough for the Congress to keep a check on the politics done by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. There is no doubt that Himanta Biswa Sharma is a smart politician but due to his negative political activities his political and social graph is decreasing, which was evident in the previous Lok Sabha elections. At a time when people have started to reject communal politics, in the same time Assam CM Sharma has started communal politics. The people of Assam want development with peace, which was evident in the tenure of former CM Tarun Gogoi. Further, the biggest disadvantage for the BJP is no leader will take over if Himanta Biswa Sarma falters.
