Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Silchar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday to inaugurate a new 20-bed cardiology ICU. This event marked the final day of his three-day tour of Barak Valley. During his visit, Sarma also reviewed the ongoing construction of a 535-bed emergency building, which, when completed next November, will expand the hospital’s capacity to about 1,885 beds, up from the current 1,350, including ICU beds.

The Chief Minister evaluated the upcoming facilities in the new emergency building, which will house five departments to enhance patient care, particularly in critical and emergency cases. Additionally, he announced plans for a new 1,000-bed building on the hospital premises. Sarma also reviewed the hospital’s ancillary services and staff needs for the next decade, directing PWD (Building) officials to develop a master plan for future expansion.

Attendees at the visit included Guardian Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, MP Parimal Suklabaidya, MLAs Kaushik Rai and Dipayan Chakraborty, Principal Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, and other senior government officials.
