In a big boost for the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Jeherul Islam has joined the grand old party. Jeherul was the former President of All India United Democratic Youth Front (AIUDYF) and was seen close to party supremo Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, the former MP of Assam.

Jeherul Islam was the spokesperson of AIUDF and was one of the vocal voices of the party. This move from the AIUDF to Congress has created a setback for the party with zero seats in the Lok Sabha after MP Badruddin Ajmal was defeated by Congress MP Rakibul Hussain.

Taking to social media, Jeherul Islam has thanked AICC Assam observer Jitendra Singh Alwar, Assistant Supervisor Mr. Sageh, APCC President Bhupen Kumar Bora, MP Rakibul Hussain, MP Gaurav Gogoi, MP Pradyut Bordoloi, CLP Debabrata Saikia and other senior leaders.

Political observers have seen the move crucial ahead of the 2026 Assembly Elections with Jeherul Islam having significant outreach in the greater Mongoldoi area and other minority areas of the state. This will further help the Congress to consolidate the minority voters in the upcoming Assembly elections.

In his resignation letter addressed to the AIUDF President, Jeherul has questioned the leadership of the party following his departure.
