Iran has unveiled its latest ballistic missile, Etemad, which boasts a maximum range of 1,700 kilometres (1,056 miles). The missile was introduced during a ceremony in Tehran on National Aerospace Day, with President Masoud Pezeshkian in attendance.
According to state television, Etemad is the newest missile developed by the Iranian defence ministry, marking a significant step in the country’s military advancements.
Western Concerns Over Iran’s Missile Program
Western nations have long raised concerns over Iran’s growing ballistic missile capabilities, warning that such advancements could destabilise the Middle East.
Iran has previously used its missiles to target Israel, its regional rival, amid the ongoing Gaza war tensions.
During the unveiling, President Pezeshkian defended Iran’s missile development, stating:
“The development of defence capabilities and space technologies ensures that no country dares to attack Iranian territory.”
A Show of Strength Amid Tensions
The missile unveiling comes ahead of the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Republic’s formation on February 10, 1979.
Since the return of former US President Donald Trump, known for his “maximum pressure” strategy on Iran, Tehran has frequently showcased its military strength. Recent military drills and the reveal of underground bases highlight Iran’s efforts to boost its defence capabilities.
Iran’s Military Evolution Since the 1979 Revolution
Before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran sourced most of its military equipment from the US. However, after Washington cut ties and imposed sanctions, Iran was forced to develop its own weapons industry.
During the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), Iran operated under an arms embargo but later built a large arsenal of domestically produced missiles, air defence systems, and drones.
Negotiations and Military Strategy
Despite its military advancements, Iran has indicated a willingness to restart negotiations over its nuclear program, which has remained a major point of tension with Western nations.
As the situation unfolds, the unveiling of the Etemad missile signals Iran’s continued push for military self-reliance and its determination to counter foreign pressures.
