Fresh satellite images have exposed significant Russian military movement close to Finland’s eastern border, according to a report by Swedish broadcaster SVT. The images, provided by Planet Labs, show increasing construction, tent camps, and aircraft deployments.
Multiple Military Sites Spotted
According to the Helsinki Times, the activity is concentrated in four main locations: Kamenka, Petrozavodsk, Severomorsk-2, and Olenya. At Kamenka, which is just 60 kilometers from the Finnish border, over 130 military tents have been erected since February 2025. The site could reportedly accommodate up to 2,000 soldiers.
Presence of Aircraft and Armored Vehicles
Satellite visuals show helicopters, bombers, and a new tent camp at some of the bases. Around 175 kilometers east of the Finnish border, three new storage halls have been constructed, potentially housing up to 50 armored vehicles.
NATO Link and Expert Opinions
Military analyst Emil Kastehelmi told SVT that the growing activity is part of Russia’s previously stated response to NATO’s expansion. Finland officially became a NATO member in April 2023.
Sweden’s Chief of Defence Michael Claesson added, “When we applied for NATO membership, Russia said it would take such steps. We are now seeing that happen.”
Poland Blames Russia for Arson in Warsaw
Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Russian intelligence services of orchestrating a fire at the Marywilska shopping centre in Warsaw in May 2024. He stated on X, “We now know for sure that the great fire… was caused by arson ordered by the Russian special services.”
