Anwar Ibrahim, a seasoned opposition leader, will eventually be appointed prime minister of Malaysia, culminating a turbulent political career that saw him go from often coming close to winning the seat to spending years in jail on sodomy-related charges.

According to a statement from the palace, King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has picked Anwar’s reformist Pakatan Harapan to head the country’s next government. Anwar’s coalition gained the most seats in the general election held on Saturday, but no combination was able to secure a majority.
