US President Joe Biden pledged support for Iranian women during his speech at the United Nations on Wednesday in light of the fact that at least eight people have died during the widespread protests that broke out in Iran after a woman died while in the custody of the police.

Following are the top five updates on Iranian protesters and what Joe Biden said:

1. “Today we stand with the brave folks and the brave women of Iran who right now are marching to achieve their basic rights,” Joe Biden said in a speech to the UN after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

2. Iran had a flurry of protests following the passing of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been detained by the nation’s morality police for reportedly donning a hijab headscarf in a “improper” manner.

3. Iranian authorities have refuted the assertion that Amini died as a result of a severe hit to her head.

4. In protests where there were a lot of women in attendance, protesters defiantly took off their hijabs and burned them in bonfires or symbolically chopped off their hair.

5. According to AFP, nationwide Internet services have been severely disrupted. According to Iranian   state television, street protests had spread to 15 cities, and police had to use tear gas and make arrests to break up crowds of up to 1,000 people.
