The Americans could see the immunisation drive begin in their country as early as on 12 December, if Dr Moncef Slaoui, head of Operation Warp Speed, the coronavirus vaccine programme, is to be believed.

A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee is set to meet on 10 December to discuss Pfizer Inc’s request for an emergency use authorisation for its developing Covid-19 vaccine. US drugmaker Pfizer Inc, which has developed a 95% effective vaccine against the virus, is now seeking the emergency use tag from the US government for its dosage. Pfizer has said the emergency use tag could start the process early and the coronavirus vaccine doses could be available as early as next month. “Our plan is to be able to ship vaccines to the immunization sites within 24 hours from the approval, so I expect maybe on day two after approval on the 11th or the 12th of December,” Dr Slaoui said.

Slaoui told CNN he expects vaccinations would begin on the second day after approval, 12 December.

On Wednesday, Pfizer said the final results of its ongoing coronavirus vaccine trials have suggested that the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine shots are 95% effective, a month after the first dose was administered.
