The creator of a deepfake video featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna has been arrested in Delhi, according to the Delhi police. The deepfake video went viral in November, prompting concerns about the misuse of technology and calls for regulations on social media platforms.

The video initially showcased British-Indian influencer Zara Patel entering a lift in a black outfit, with the deepfake technology seamlessly morphing her face into that of Rashmika Mandanna. Mandanna expressed her concern, describing the incident as “extremely scary” and emphasizing the vulnerability individuals face due to the misuse of technology.

Following the viral deepfake video, the Centre issued an advisory to social media platforms, highlighting legal provisions covering deepfakes and potential penalties for their creation and circulation. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar met with social media platforms to review their progress in addressing misinformation and deepfakes, and advisories were planned for 100% compliance by platforms.

Deepfakes, synthetic media created using artificial intelligence to manipulate visual and audio elements, have become a concern for cyber threats. The Union IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that notices were sent to social media companies to take necessary steps to identify and remove deepfake content. He emphasized that the “Safe Harbour” Clause doesn’t apply if platforms don’t take adequate steps to address deepfakes.

In addition to Rashmika Mandanna, deepfake videos of various celebrities, including Katrina Kaif, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, and Sachin Tendulkar, have surfaced on the internet in recent weeks.
