Active cases fall below 3 lakh for first time in six months, half of them in Kerala

On Sunday, 26,041 new Covid cases were discovered across India, of which 15,951 came from Kerala alone.

The number of active Covid-19 cases in the country has fallen below three lakh (299,620), for the first time in six months. About 55 per cent of all the active cases in the country, which comes to around 1.63 lakh cases, are currently being reported from Kerala. After Kerala, Maharashtra has the highest active cases, at around 37,000.

At the peak of the second wave in May, the total number of active cases in India had risen to as high as 37.45 lakh.

On Sunday, 26,041 new cases were discovered across the country, of which 15,951 came from Kerala alone. Maharashtra contributed another 3,200 cases. Interestingly, Mizoram, with a total population of about 12 lakh, has been amongst the top five contributors for over a week now, reporting over 1,500 cases on an average. The active case count in the state has risen to almost 16,000, the fourth highest in the country, after Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu (17,285).

Coming back to Kerala, the number of active cases in the state stands at 163,280. As many as 17,658 people recovered from the disease in the state in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries in Kerala to 44,41,430. The Covid-19 death toll in Kerala stands at 24,603.

According to Kerala Health Minister Veena George, more than 90 per cent of the eligible population has been administered the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in the state.

As for the national capital, a total of 29 new Covid-19 cases and zero fatalities were reported in Delhi in the last 24 hours. As per the health bulletin issued by Delhi government on Sunday, the cumulative cases registered so far is 14,38,714. These include 371 active cases. With 37 recoveries reported in the last 24 hours, the total recoveries climbed to 14,13,258. The death tally is 25,085.

Nationally, the active cases account for less than 1 per cent and are currently at 0.89 per cent of total cases. With 29,621 recoveries during the last 24 hours, the recovery rate stands at 97.78 per cent. As many as 3,29,31,972 people have recovered from the disease so far, according to the health ministry.

The daily positivity rate has remained below 3 per cent for the last 28 days and currently stands at 2.24 per cent while the weekly positivity rate is at 1.94 per cent. It has remained below 3 per cent in the last 94 days.
