Members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the BJP, on Monday accused the Left affiliated students’ union for the desecration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s portrait on his birth anniversary on Sunday.

Earlier, ABVP blamed the NSUI, the Congress-backed student wing, for creating disturbances at the office of the JNU students’ body. The ABVP has been demanding to name the JNUSU office after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The social media convenor of ABVP, Kumar Ashutosh, while talking to a prominent news agency on Monday, said, “A portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was installed at the JNUSU office. Meanwhile, the Left student wing not only removed the portrait but also threw the garland around it into the trash, which led to the brawl between the two factions on the university campus. It is reported that several students suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.

Members of the ABVP have demanded that the university administration and the Delhi Police take strict action against the accused and that the JNUSU office be named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The NSUI has been singing a different song and denying any involvement in the destruction of the portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the JNU campus. NSUI general secretary Ganpat Chaudhary claimed that ABVP members had kept the portrait in the office without permission, so other students removed it.

The tussle between the ABVP and left-affiliated student wings has been continuing. ABVP also accused outsiders of being involved in the incident as well.
