AAP’s Haryana State President, Dr. Sushil Gupta, was ousted from the Rajya Sabha as the party didn’t endorse him for a second term. Swati Maliwal has replaced him as the party’s candidate. Gupta mentioned stepping down from his position to concentrate on Haryana, committing to undertake any role assigned by the party.
According to party sources, he will prepare for the possible Lok Sabha elections in May. However, the decision on where he will contest the elections will be taken only after discussing sheet sharing with the I.N.D.I.A alliance. He was made the state president of Haryana Aam Aadmi Party on May 25, 2023. Apart from AAP leader Sanjay Singh, Rajya Sabha MP from Delhi Sushil Kumar Gupta and Narayan Das Gupta are members of Rajya Sabha. In this, Narayan Das Gupta and Sanjay have been made candidates again. Swati Maliwal replaces Sushil Kumar Gupta as the candidate. The nomination process began with a notification released on January 2, and forms can be filed until January 9.
Sushil Gupta resigned from the Congress on November 28, 2013. At the time, Delhi Congress President Ajay Maken inquired about his departure via Twitter. Gupta cited the promise of a Rajya Sabha seat from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as his reason for leaving. In 2018, AAP nominated him as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha, a move that faced criticism from poet Kumar Vishwas, who has since left the party. Vishwas labeled the decision as accommodating outsiders.
Before his political involvement, Dr. Sushil Gupta was associated with the Congress and contested from the Motinagar assembly constituency in Delhi in 2013, where he faced AAP candidate Kuldeep Singh Channa and lost the election. Outside of politics, Gupta is known for his role in managing educational institutions like Ganga International School in Delhi and Haryana, along with the Maharaja Agrasen Hospital in West Delhi. Prior to his political career, he had a notable reputation as an educationist and social worker.
Swati Maliwal is the chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women. Swati Maliwal is currently the chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). She is the ex-wife of former Haryana AAP president Naveen Jaihind. The core committee of Anna movement included Naveen Jaihind and Swati Maliwal. It was here that both of them got acquainted and became close. After this both of them had a love marriage.
