The Aam Admi Party (AAP) nominated former MLA Sushil Kumar Rinku as its candidate for the May 10 Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll.
Sushil Rinku joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday, hours after being expelled from the Congress, in the company of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann. Rinku, the Congress MLA from Jalandhar West, had been expelled from the party for engaging in “anti-party” actions.
“Sushil Rinku is welcome in the AAP family, and I am confident that the people of Jalandhar will support us in winning the Lok Sabha bypolls,” Arvind Kejriwal said at a news conference.
The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat has been empty since January when Congress MP Santokh Chaudhary died of a heart attack.
On January 14, the 77-year-old collapsed while walking alongside Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during the Punjab portion of the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Following Chaudhary’s passing, byelections were held in the seat.
In March 2022, the governing AAP took control of 92 of the 117 assembly seats in Punjab.
