US and Russian officials are reportedly discussing energy deals to push Moscow towards peace talks in Ukraine

The talks come weeks after US President Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on Indian goods for buying Russian oil

Trump greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this month, fueling speculation of backchannel deals

According to Reuters, US and Russian officials are conversation for the US based giant Exxon Mobil to re-enter Russia’s Sakhalin-1 project, which it exited in 2022

Exxon Mobil had left Russia after sanctions were imposed over its invasion of Ukraine, cutting Moscow off from investment

Reportedly, another proposed option is Russia purchasing US equipment for its sanctioned Arctic LNG-2 project

Proposals also included the US purchasing Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers, despite ongoing sanctions

India, meanwhile, faces a tariff blow as Trump doubles duties on its exports to 50% from August 27th

The White House is reportedly eager to announce a "big deal" as proof of progress after the Alaska summit
