8,506 new Covid cases in Delhi, 1,656 in Mumbai; lowest daily rise in weeks

With a strict lockdown in place, Delhi reported 8,506 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, the first time in over a month that the number of new cases is below the 10,000 mark. The city reported 289 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to a health bulletin by Delhi government.

The national capital had reported over 10,000 cases on 11 April as cases surged further in the second wave of the pandemic before showing a decline in the past few days. The positivity rate has come down to 12.40 per cent, which is the lowest since 12 April.

The total case count in the city stands at 13,80,981 and it has 71,794 active cases. The death toll in the national capital now stands at 20,907. The cumulative fatality rate is at 1.51 per cent.

Maharashtra too saw a drop of nearly 2,659 infections from a day ago as it reported 39,923 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, while 695 more patients succumbed to the disease, the state health department said.

With the addition of 39,923 COVID-19 cases, down from 42,582 on Thursday, the state’s caseload increased to 53,09,215, while the death toll reached 79,552.

The financial capital of India, Mumbai on Friday reported 1,657 new Covid-19 cases, 2,572 recoveries, and 62 deaths in the last 24 hours. The number of total cases in Mumbai reached 6,85,705 and the total recoveries 6,31,982. The number of the death toll in Mumbai is 14,138 and the active cases 37,656.

Since the beginning of May, the daily count of infections has stayed below the 4,000-mark. This week the city has recorded less than 2,000 new cases four times.

At least 2,572 patients were discharged from hospitals on Friday, taking the number of recoveries to 6,31,982, leaving the city with 37,656 active cases. Mumbai’s Covid-19 recovery rate is 92 per cent.

The city had witnessed its highest daily spike of 11,163 infections on 4 April and the highest 90 fatalities on 1 May.

Delhi has been under a lockdown since April 19 in view of surge in Covid-19 infections. The lockdown has been extended till 17 May. Maharashtra too has been under Covid curbs till 31 May.
