Around 700 contract employees of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) were provided with permanent jobs. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday announced the regularisation of the contract staff and handed them their employment certificates.

While handing over the certificates to the employees, Kejriwal said: “I’ve been told that for the first time in the history of Delhi government, such a large number of contract workers are being made permanent.”

He further said that the state government intended to provide permanent employment to its every temporary staffer. “We don’t have a lot of power; many decisions require approval from the central government. We could take such measures because DJB is part of the Delhi government. Today, 700 employees of DJB have received confirmation of their permanent employment. I’d like to see permanent workers in all departments of Delhi government, but our power is restricted. But we will have a word with the central government,” the CM added.

While applauding the achievements and attempts taken by the Aam Aadmi Party, Kejriwal said: “There is a notion that ‘kaccha’ employees should not be made ‘pucca’ because they will become lazy and not work much.”

He also spoke about the revolution brought forth by the party after forming the government in 2015 and pointed out that the healthcare system of Delhi improved because of the doctors and nurses. “However, since forming our administration in 2015, we have solely used government instructors, doctors, and nurses to bring about a revolution in education and to enhance the healthcare system,” Kejriwal said.

Earlier, several employees of DJB worked on a temporary basis and raised their concerns and demanded regularisation of jobs. The CM said: “The government doesn’t work as much as its employees. Today, the employees who have received their permanent employment will work wholeheartedly and will not be afraid of the future of their employment status.”
