On August 9, police reported that 285 gold coins, totaling around 1,680 grams and valued at Rs 80 lakh, were stolen from Northern Marine Management India Private Limited, a shipping crewing company in Powai. These coins were intended as retirement gifts for employees.

The complainant company, based in Hiranandani, Powai, is part of the Northern Marine group from Glasgow, UK, and provides manpower to global shipping firms. Some of these client companies reward their retiring employees with gold coins after 5-20 years of service.

According to the police report, a member of the company’s 12-person team discovered the theft on August 9 when checking the wooden safe at the Powai office. The coins, which ranged from 2 to 20 grams each, were missing.

Since there was no evidence of forced entry, an outsider’s involvement was ruled out. The company then interviewed the five senior executives who had access to the safe’s key. The investigation revealed that the safe was last accessed on July 12 by two employees. One of these employees has been absent due to health issues since July 22.

The police have filed a complaint against an unidentified person and are currently investigating the theft.
