Weightlifer Gurdeep Singh begged for bronze in the men’s 109-plus kg in the ongoing Common Wealth Games in Birmingham.

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the athlete, saying, “Hard work and dedication lead to outstanding outcomes.” This is what Gurdeep Singh has shown by winning the bronze medal in weightlifting at the CWG. Gurdeep clinched a bronze medal with a combined weight of 390 kg in the men’s 109-plus final.

He failed to lift 167 kg in the snatch division on his first try. He lifted 167 kg on his second try. He added more weight for his third and final effort in the category, but he was unable to lift 173 kg. With the top 167 kg, he concluded the snatch round.

His second attempt to lift 215 kg was unsuccessful, but he put everything on the line for his final attempt to lift 223 kg, a Games record.

At the ongoing CWG, weightlifter Punrima Pandey too finished sixth in the women’s 87-plus kg.

After two failed attempts, she finally put up a combined lift of 228 kg. In the jerk and clean categories, she lifted 125 kg.
