The Telangana government has decided to implement 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for the people belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) of the society.

The government has invoked the 103rd Constitutional Amendment to implement the 10 percent quota in the state. The 103rd amendment of the Indian Constitution provides for reservations for the economically weaker sections of society in higher educational institutions, including private institutions whether aided or un-aided by the state, other than the Minority Educational Institutions referred to in Article 30 of the Constitution of India and also provided for reservations for them in posts in initial appointments in services in the state. On 21January, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had said that a high-level meeting would be convened to discuss the issue and orders would be issued after the upper caste communities in the state threatened to start agitation from 30January.

“The state government, after careful consideration of the matter, has decided to implement 10% reservation to the Economically Weaker Section for admission into all educational institutions in the state and also in respect of initial appointment to the posts in services under the state, following the criteria and guidelines prescribed by the Government of India,” said Somesh Kumar, Chief Secretary to Government of Telangana in the order.
