‘No kids on motorcycles’

AN ordinance prohibiting children below eight years old from riding on the back or front seats of motorcycles, scooters and motorbikes is being mulled by the Iloilo City Council

Councilor Nielex Tupas, proponent of the ordinance, said the measure aims to reduce or at least minimize the incidence of disability and deaths resulting from injuries caused by motorcycle accidents.

The ordinance will also require drivers to wear crash helmets while plying city streets and national highways.

The proposed ordinance is an amendment to the existing City Ordinance No. 242-1977 which already requires the use of helmets and limiting motorcycle passengers to two including the driver.

“This is well consulted, we talked to different stakeholders regarding this particular ordinance,” Tupas said.

Any minor caught violating the proposed ordinance shall be subject to the provisions of the Juvenile Justice System Act of 2007.

Violators of the ordinance shall be fined P350 for the first offense, P550 for the second offense and P1,000 or imprisonment of not exceeding three days or both for the third and subsequent offenses. (PNA)
