US state dep’t backs program improving HR reporting in RP
By Edgar Cadagat

BACOLOD CITY – A representative of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWRP) concluded a dialogue with Negros journalists yesterday, Sunday, with both sides planning steps to improve human rights reporting in the country and various regions.

Holding the consultation dialogue was IWPR special project officer Alan Davis, a British national. He met with Negros journalists Julius Mariveles, Negros Daily Bulletin Publisher, Pert Toga, newly-elected NPC vice-president Henceboy Cestina, Negros Media Council for Press Freedom (NMCPF) secretary Edgar Cadagat, XL Magazine’s managing editor Dani Dangcalan, broadcaster Jeffrey Gelangre, and writer Raquel Gariando.

Davis said the IWPR intends to carry out a program of training and networking to be able to produce stories for world reportage which would be facilitated by the network they have already established worldwide.

To accomplish this, the IWPR has chosen as its partner in the Philippines the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), the Center for Community Journalism and Development (CCJD), and the Mindanao-based Minda News Agency.

The project is supported by the US State Department Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

The IWPR has similar projects worldwide in the Balkans, Russia, Iran, Asia and is now expanding into Southeast Asia, said Davis.

Stories written by those belonging to various IWPR-linked news networks could be published in publications worldwide where it would have the attention of those who are influential in their own countries.

The program, which was launched recently in UP, would be implemented within a period of two years in the Philippines, Davis said.

No.2  What well-wishing of bed do you have?
Hi, all! How's it going? I like DIY, but in another situation, I'm positively dull.
