Net closing in on Mondia killersEdgar Cadagat

AND HOPEFULLY FOR THE MASTERMIND, TOO.  If we are to gauge from continuing reports on the killing of the former Pulupandan Mayor Luis Mondia Jr., it appears that the net to bag the suspects is already fast closing in on them.

Reliable witnesses, according to the regional PNP, have already issued their sworn testimonies, while the circumstantial evidences clearly point to the suspects whose names are already in the complaint to be filed with the Iloilo City Prosecutor’s Office.

The strongest evidence thus far, we may say, is the uncovering of the occupants of a taxicab rented by the suspects who were part of the back-up network which included another motorcycle with two men on board aside from the gunman and his driver, again on board a motorcycle.

The payoff money was divided among the suspects reportedly in a northern Iloilo town after the job of killing the gentle and amiable Mondia was done.

A GOOD JOB. If we may say so, the regional police office has done a good job, something which is exceptional considering that many crimes remain unsolved as of this writing, with the suspect usually not identified, charged, convicted and punished for their evil deeds.  There have been many gruesome crimes in Bacolod City, among which was the massacre of the whole Revilla family years ago, a gruesome murder good as movie stuff. The killer, a single person, however, was arrested and imprisoned.

The triple kidnap-murder case involving several police officers and civilians are also among the most celebrated cases in Bacolod City which, fortunately, is considered solved. As in the case involving the killing of the late publicist Bubby Dacer, stool pigeons came up to testify against their former cohorts thus, nailing those involved in the heinous crimes. In the case of Bubby Dacer, police officers also came up to pin down the alleged mastermind in the killings.

In the case of Salabas et al kidnap-murder case, an asset came up to testify against his former police bosses thus nailing them down. Without Cecil "Giant" Brilliantes's testimony, the case would not have reached the court.

TURNING STATE WITNESS. Those involved in the killing of the Pulupandan mayor, according to the police, are about seven men minus the mastermind who possibly paid from P 800,000 to P1 million. One of the killers or one whose participation was very limited may have second thoughts later and make an effort to save his skin by turning state witness, as Brilliantes had done

Several police officers once close to Senator and retired Gen. Panfilo Lacson Jr. have also turned state witness. Ditto with one of the suspects in the Mary Rose Jimenez killings. The moment one of the killers in the Mondia killing turns state witness, the mastermind is kaput. This could be another single blunder, "kagat sa siko" situation for master criminals. But, indeed!
