Gibo in 3rd place in new
survey, overtakes Erap
SEN. Manuel “Manny” Villar of the Nacionalista Party (NP) is ahead of Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III of the Liberal Party (LP), but former defense secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. of Lakas-Kampi-CMD has overtaken former President Joseph “Erap” Ejercito Estrada of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) to come in 3rd place in a new nationwide survey.
Based on an article and columns written by Bobit Avila that were recently published in a Manila broadsheet and a Cebu-based newspaper, the latest survey done by the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) with the marketing research firm Campaigns and Image, Villar is ahead of the pack with a 32% rating.
Aquino is in 2nd place with a 23% rating, but
Teodoro is now “within striking distance,” having garnered 18% or only
6 percentage points away from his cousin’s score.
The PPCRV survey, which, according to Avila, was conducted between Feb.
10 and Feb. 20 this year, also showed that Estrada is now in far 4th
with a 5.75% rating.
The survey had a sample size of 5,100 individuals, of whom 4,947 were
respondents who came from various sectors in Luzon, Visayas and
Mindanao. The respondents were asked which presidential candidate had
the better platform of government, Avila reported.
Meanwhile, the widely read columnist Belinda Olivares-Cunanan wrote in
a Manila-based broadsheet that Teodoro had already captured the "youth
vote" in an earlier survey similarly done by the PPCRV from Jan.
20-31, also in cooperation with Campaigns and Image.
Avila reported that this PPCRV-Campaign and Image survey was
commissioned by companies in the United States and the United Kingdom
that are doing business in the Philippines.
The Jan. 20-31 poll, which was conducted among 5,100 voters
representing various age brackets nationwide, showed that Teodoro has
cornered the youth vote because he was the top choice among the current
crop of presidential candidates in the survey done among 18-28 year
olds and among 29-39 year-old voters, Cunanan wrote in her column.
In the PPCRV survey, Teodoro reportedly got a 3.72% rating among 18-28
year-old voters, while Aquino got only 1.8% and Villar, 1 percent.
Among 29-39 year-old voters, Teodoro’s rating was the highest at 3.24%, as compared to Aquino's 2.76% and Villar's 1.2%.
According to the PPCRV survey, while Aquino and Villar are
neck-and-neck in cornering the votes among Filipinos aged 52-62 years
old, Teodoro was 3rd in this category with 4.73%.
Erap landed 4th in all age categories, Cunanan said in her column.
Political experts noted that capturing the youth vote is crucial to
victory in the presidential race because young Filipino voters comprise
the biggest chunk of the electorate in the May 10 balloting.
These experts further said that this sector is the most discerning and
has the opportunity to gather all the information it needs from the
media and the Internet about candidates vying for national posts.
As such, they added, young voters cannot be readily influenced by campaign gimmicks and expensive political ads.
