TWENTY-TWO kilometers away from Iloilo City sits the historical church
of the picturesque coastal town of Tigbauan. Dahlings, it is the only
church in the Philippines with Churriguesque-plateresque style until it
was altered and renovated with two additional unrelated towers.
This awesome heritage site, the Parish of St John Sahagun of Tigbauan,
was built in 1578 when Fr. Pedro Chirino was the parish priest and
reconstructed during Fr. Fernando Comporendondo’s time. In the 1750’s
this church was said to be the favorite destination of Spanish
pilgrims. It is made of sandstone and built strongly to withstand the
earthquake of the second quarter of the 18th century. The old convent
was destroyed in 1984. |

One remarkable religious structure is a rectangular niche encasing San
Nicholas de Tolentino which marks the second story and topping it is
another niche with the statue of Sto. Niño. It was noted that during
the January 1883 Sto. Niño celebrations, the crowd overflowed from the
church and loaded the plaza with more than 10,000 people from Negros
and Panay. However, the original antique Sto. Niño icon was stolen few
year’s back and until now it was never returned or recovered.
But as the spirit lives on for the Sto. Niño devotees, just recently
the parish celebrated once again the annual feast day of Sr. Sto. Niño
with full pomp and pageantry as a way of thanksgiving of the people of
Tigbauan for all God’s blessings.
Leading the religious celebration was this year’s Hermana Mayora, the
compassionate Doña Erlinda Pineda who helped spruce up the whole church
for such grand festivity.
Doña Erlinda Pineda commissioned the talented florist Parigald Salarda
and Randy Salarda where both of them spruced up the awesome flower
arrangements at the church’s altar which matched perfectly the
carefully laden mural in stones that is said to be one of the most
beautiful altar murals in the region, dahlings!
